Forced Marriage Training for Professionals

Internationally, 12 million girls are married before the age of 18 years old every year. Forced and under-age marriages also happen in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Shakti has dealt with an estimated number of over 80 recorded forced marriage youth cases since 2010. However, we feel that this is the tip of the iceberg. Many forced and under-aged marriages go unreported - some of these marriages are not legally registered, sometimes happening overseas or online.

With new legislation recognising "coercion to marry", this workshop will be focused on how our response systems can better ensure the safety of children, youth, women and rainbow communities who have been affected by forced marriage.

We invite all agencies, organisations, schools, health institutions and professionals such as Family Court judges, NZ Police, Oranga Tamariki social workers and school counsellors to join us for an introductory training session on understanding forced marriage in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

This workshop will cover:

  1. Understanding and identifying forced marriage in Aotearoa/New Zealand
  2. Addressing gaps in responding to forced marriage and assessing safety risks for women, youth and children
  3. New legislation changes related to forced and underage marriage
